Howell, MI - The first game of the season is always filled with excitement, fireworks, and surprises. That being said, the Wolverines probably wished for fewer surprises. Up by two scores late in the game, 28-14, the Wolverines simply could not close out the game, as the Giants scored two late touchdowns to shock the Wolverines, and end the contest in a 28-28 tie.
"What a play by Ryan!" said all-time quarterback Mr. Horne. "I thought he made a great play adjusting to the deflection and picking off the pass. Then he had the awareness to turn it into a pick-6".
The Wolverines seemed to have the game in command, going ahead 28-14 on Reed's second TD of the day midway through the fourth quarter. Logan's stellar defensive play made Reed's TD possible, as Logan picked off the Giants for the second time on the play right before Reed's long touchdown grab.
"Can't say enough about Logan M today," said Horne. "He was all over the field, disguising his coverages and picking off two of my passes."
The Wolverines extended their lead to 21-0 right before halftime on Marcus' long catch and run that resulted in a touchdown. Marcus caught a short pass in the left flat and turned up field, leaving the Giant defenders in the dust.
John R kept the Giants within striking distance, hauling in a long bomb from Mr. Horne to close the gap to 21-7. John got past the Wolverine secondary and jumped up high to record his first TD of the young season.
"The outcome of this game can be a learning lesson to the entire league," stressed Horne. "The Wolverines were up 21-0 at one point, and then 28-14 late, but the Giants never gave up and kept fighting. It doesn't matter if you're up 20, or down 20, you have to give it your all on every play."
Ryan O lead the Giants with 5 receptions and 3 TDs. John R added 2 receptions and one TD for the Giants. Marcus paced the Wolverines with 3 catches and 2 touchdowns, while Reed added 2 receptions and 2 TDs.
News & Notes:
This year's opening game was very similar to last year's opening game, when former 4th Grade footballer Carter B made a miraculous catch to tie the game on the last play as time ran out.
Today's marked the first time that Mr. Horne threw 3 interceptions on opening day. Horne's previous high for interceptions on opening day was one (2007).
