Howell, MI - The Steelers narrowly defeated the Lions, 98-91, in an epic back-and-forth 4th Grade Super Bowl. The record setting, high scoring game featured several lead changes, was close throughout, and proved to be an instant classic.
Calvin Cotton caught the go-ahead touchdown, putting the Steelers up 98-91, with only two seconds remaining in the game. The Lions called their final timeout and set up their last chance effort to tie the game, but their 'Hail Mary' pass attempt was batted down by the Steelers' Bryson Scott as time expired.
There were several team and individual records broken in this year's Super Bowl. Most points scored in one half (Steelers - 56), most points scored in one game (Steelers - 98), highest combined point total (Steelers & Lions - 189), most touchdowns caught (Calvin Cotton - 6), and most receptions (Lions/Greene - 7, Steelers/Calvin Cotton - 7).
"These teams were on a collision course for the Super Bowl all season," remarked all-time quarterback Mr. Horne. "Both teams were 5-0 heading into this game, and you knew that there was going to be a very high level of play. I can't say enough about all of the kids attitudes. Sure it helps that they are all buddies off the field, but they all made their families proud today with their sportsmanship and how they conducted themselves on the field."
At many times throughout the game fans witnessed opposing players high-fiving and congratulating each other for great plays. The respect for one another was obvious, and that respect is not often showed in championship venues.
The Lions trailed 56-49 at halftime, however, the Lions stayed focused and took the lead late in the game, 91-84, on a 80 yard bomb to Joe Erickson. Calvin Cotton's timely interception on the Lions next possession proved to be a huge defensive play in a game that showcased an incredible amount of offense.
Calvin Cotton was named Super Bowl MVP with his incredible 7 reception, 6 touchdown, and two interception performance. Cotton's 6 touchdowns broke the single game record (5 TD's) held by former 4th Grade Football greats Johnny Shields and Joey Gossett.
News and Notes:
Mr. Clay returned from retirement and didn't miss a beat, throwing 15 touchdowns and only 1 interception. Clay's high paced, no-huddle offense, proved impossible to stop for both defenses ..... The Lions Matthew Boss returned to play in the second half, after a knee injury forced him out of action at the end of the first half. Boss finished the game with 5 receptions and 4 touchdowns ..... The Cotton brothers (Calvin and Carter) became only the fourth Hutchings family to have siblings who have won a 4th Grade Super Bowl (Spisak's, Palo's, and Wetzel's) ..... The Lions tallied more receptions than the Steelers (26-24), while the Steelers had an advantage in the interception battle (3-1) ..... Mr. Horne was presented with two gifts from all eight 4th Grade Football teams during pre-game. Horne received a large collage of photos from this past season as well as a personalized Hutchings Hurricanes jersey that Horne wore for the game ..... Several former 4th Grade Football players were in attendance, including Ausitn Lord (2005-2006), Tyler Johnson (2005-2006), Nick Barnowski (2003-2004)and Blake Hansen (2003-2004). Both Johnson and Hansen are 4th Grade Football Hall of Fame members.
