Howell, MI - Josh C's last-second touchdown catch ended this game in fitting fashion, a 21-21 tie. The Cowboys and the Bullboxers went back-and-forth all day, as a sold out crowd witnessed a high level of play from each team. Both teams scored on each and every offensive possession. There were few dropped passes, and each team featured a player who played their best game of the season (Brendan D & Tommy P).
The Cowboys (0-1-2) won the opening coin toss and scored in a hurry when Carter B went 80 yards for a touchdown on the game's first play. "I saw a match-up I liked on the outside and I called an audible to Carter to run a fly pattern," said all-time quarterback Mr. Horne. "I knew Carter would make a play, so I just put the ball up there and let him go get it."
It didn't take long for the Bullboxers (1-1-1) to return the favor, as Mr. Horne hooked up with Brendan D for an almost identical looking 80 yard touchdown on the game's very next play. "Brendan D played out of his mind today," said Horne. "He showed amazing speed today. Brendan was getting behind the Cowboys secondary all game long. He was simply too much for them to contain."
After two touchdowns in the first 30 seconds of the game, the pace slowed some due to the strong, swirling winds. Each team marched methodically down the field on their next possession, capping off each drive with a touchdown.
With the scored tied at 14-14, Tommy P scored his second touchdown of the game, putting the Cowboys up 21-14 with less than one minute on the game clock. Tommy's great touchdown grab all but sealed the victory for the Cowboys, however, several Cowboy players celebrated with Tommy in the endzone, and this lengthy celebration earned a 15 yard delay of game penalty. That flag gave the Bullboxers excellent field position on their last drive. The extra 15 yards turned out to be a huge advantage for the Bullboxers, given that they only had 58 seconds to work with and no timeouts.
The Bullboxers faced 4th down and 10 from the Cowboy 40 yard line with one second left in the game. Mr. Horne heaved a pass toward the 10 yard line and the Cowboys committed their second big mistake in the final minute. A Cowboy defender was flagged with pass interference, as he clearly made contact with the Bullboxer receiver before the ball arrived.
That penalty gave the Bullboxers one last shot and set up 1st and goal from the 10 yard line with no time remaining on the clock. Josh C ran a perfect crossing pattern and found himself wide open in the endzone. He went down to the ground to make sure he secured a low pass from Mr. Horne for the game tying touchdown (pictured left). Players and fans stormed the field to congratulate Josh and the Bullboxers.
